The American Bar Association requires law schools to report employment outcomes as a condition of accreditation. These documents are known as "Employment Summaries," and they are usually published in PDF format on law school websites. The information included in the summaries can be extremely helpful to prospective law students, but they must be read carefully. The first consideration is the number of graduates reporting, which can be calculated by subtracting the "Employment Status Unknown" category from the total number of graduates. High reporting percentages can be considered reliable reflections of class outcomes, but lower proportions can be far less representative. Schools should ultimately be evaluated by how many full-time, long-terms jobs that require bar passage are obtained by alumni (the reports also list a "JD Advantage" category, but these types of jobs do not have a firm definition). The percentages in this most relevant of categories can vary considerably. At Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law, approximately 81% of graduates were hired in full-time jobs that mandate a license to practice law, while at the University of the District of Columbia's David A. Clarke School of Law, just 34% of alumni could say the same.
